Each year the City of Parkland holds a commemoration event on February 14 to remember the victims of the 2018 tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. This is accompanied by a service project that typically receives an outpouring of support from the community.
In the past two years, both the city and Food For The Poor held a food-packing event where hundreds of thousands of meals were packed and sent to underserved areas, which required hundreds of people working in a confined, sanitary space.
This year, due to COVID-19, the focus is shifted to a fundraiser that will build homes in Honduras.
Food For The Poor is once again partnering with the city for a virtual fundraiser honoring the 17 lives lost by providing 20 new homes for families living in desperate need. Funds raised will provide homes for families in the community of Buenos Aires located in the municipality of Dulce Nombre, Copán, Honduras.
Buenos Aires is an impoverished community where inhabitants live in rusty metal shacks held together by sticks and nails. The dirt floors inside the homes turn to mud whenever it rains, and the promise of a brighter future seems dim.
Donate at Food For The Poor. More information about the project will be at the February 14 Parkland Amphitheater’s commemoration ceremony. The nonprofit will not be accepting donations at the event.
