Florida drivers will soon be able to show their support for Israel with a special license plate.
The new tags feature the words “Florida Stands with Israel” and show Florida’s state flower, the orange blossom, intertwined with a blue Star of David on a background resembling the Israeli flag. Florida’s state fruit, the orange, also appears on the plate.
The plates received the official go-ahead on Tuesday after reaching the state’s required 3,000 pre-orders for production and distribution.
Florida has temporarily halted additional pre-orders of the plate to produce the initial batch, which will be available at Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles offices in all 67 counties from the end of January through mid-February 2025, authorities said.
The plates are not currently available for new orders, but will go on sale again at a future date not yet announced by the state.
Residents who paid $30 to pre-order the tags will pay an additional $36.90 when the plates are available. After that, authorities said, the state will resume producing more “Florida Stands With Israel” tags to meet further demand.
More tags will be available for order in early 2025 for $66.90, including registration fees. $25 from the proceeds will support Hatzalah South Florida.
The Israel solidarity tag was designed by Daniel Ackerman, a Florida State University graduate, and chosen through a public design contest sponsored by the Israeli-American Council (IAC) and Artists 4 Israel.
According to IAC, the state legislature approved the plates in 2020 after IAC’s legislative and policymaking arm, the Israeli-American Coalition for Action, advocated for them along with the Florida House of Representatives’ then-Minority Leader Rep. Kionne L. McGhee and then-Rep. Scott Plakon.
“Four years ago, we set out to create a tangible symbol of Florida’s support for Israel. Today, we’re proud to see our vision become reality,” said IAC CEO Elan Carr, the former U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. “This license plate is a testament to the enduring friendship between Florida and Israel … As these plates begin to appear on vehicles across Florida, they will serve as mobile reminders of the strong ties between Florida and Israel and reflect the shared values that unite our communities.”
