Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to visit Parkland on Saturday, March 23, as part of her continued efforts to combat the nation’s gun violence crisis and enhance community safety measures.
According to Rep Jared Moskowitz (D-FLA), Harris will tour the crime scene exactly as it was the day of the shooting when his school was turned into a war zone.
“Nothing can prepare you for when the parents and families walk you through,” said Moskowitz on social media.
During her visit, Harris plans to meet with families who have lost loved ones to gun violence in the February 14, 2018, massacre that killed 17 students and teachers.
This trip is a continuation of Harris’s advocating for significant gun safety measures and follows President Joe Biden’s remarks on the administration’s determination to tackle gun violence.
Harris has been at the forefront of the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, striving for comprehensive reforms and legislative action to reduce gun violence across the nation.
The Vice President’s agenda in Parkland will also focus on the achievements of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, lauded as the most consequential gun safety legislation in nearly three decades. This law represents a historic investment in mental health support for students, including the hiring of 14,000 mental health counselors, the implementation of red flag laws, and the enhancement of background checks, particularly for young purchasers and individuals with domestic abuse convictions.
Harris continues to urge Congress to take further steps by renewing the assault weapons ban, passing additional red flag legislation, and mandating background checks for all gun sales, emphasizing the urgency of these measures in light of the alarming rate at which gun violence has become the leading cause of death for children in America.
Florida marks the 16th state Harris has visited in her campaign against gun violence since the start of 2024, with this trip being her eleventh to the state since her inauguration.
