Broward County Public Schools celebrated excellence in education Friday night as district leaders, educators, and community partners gathered for the annual Caliber Awards, recognizing outstanding teachers, administrators, and employees across the district.
According to BCPS, more than 500 nominees were honored during the red-carpet event Feb. 6 at the Broward County Convention Center, with 16 finalists and top winners recognized before an audience of more than 1,100 community leaders, business partners, and supporters.
Among this year’s honorees is Anna Koltunova, assistant principal at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who was named BCPS Assistant Principal of the Year.
In a statement, the district credited Koltunova with strengthening instructional systems and driving significant gains in student achievement at Parkland School.
According to BCPS, Koltunova played a key role in guiding the campus through significant transitions, expanding advanced academic opportunities, and supporting programs that have positioned the school among the district’s top performers.
District officials praised her leadership, noting her focus on collaboration, resilience, and a deep commitment to student success.
The evening also recognized several other educators and staff members for their contributions across Broward County schools.
Dr. Saima Sanaullah, a science teacher and department chair at Plantation High School, earned the district’s Teacher of the Year honor. A veteran educator with more than 14 years of experience teaching advanced and honors programs, Sanaullah helped raise Biology End-of-Course exam proficiency at her school from 37% to 63%. Known for her data-driven instructional approach and innovative teaching strategies, she has helped foster a culture of achievement for both students and fellow teachers.
As Teacher of the Year, Sanaullah received cash prizes and a two-year, paid lease on a Honda vehicle from Rita and Rick Case Automotive Group, according to the district.
Cormic Priester, principal of Rock Island Elementary School, was named Principal of the Year after leading the campus to its first “A” school grade since 2009. Under her leadership, the school has seen improvements in attendance, enrollment, and academic performance. Priester is recognized for mentoring staff, building partnerships with families, and maintaining high expectations for student success.
The School/District Employee of the Year honor went to Vanderbilt Carpenter III, a security specialist at Deerfield Beach High School. Carpenter, who also has experience as a behavioral technician and campus monitor, was praised for his commitment to maintaining a safe, supportive environment for students and staff, and for his critical role in crisis response and campus safety.
In a statement, BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn praised the honorees, saying their dedication reflects the district’s strength.
“These honorees represent the very best of Broward County Public Schools,” Hepburn said. “Their passion, innovation, and unwavering commitment to students inspire excellence across our District.”
