The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Eagle Regiment continues to win honors.
The band earned an overall superior rating at the Marching Music Performance Assessment (MPA) at Cypress Bay High School and third place at the Bands of America Regional Championship at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on October 26.
The Eagle Regiment competed against 27 bands from around the nation, and according to Jed Davis, percussion director, this was the highest ranking the band had achieved at this competition.
According to the Eagle Regiment website, the band earned a Grand Champion title at the Park Vista High School Striking Cobra Invitational on November 2.
Davis believes that being in the band is a serious commitment requiring tremendous effort. He has directed percussion sections in various band programs for 46 years.
“These students put in hours of rehearsals and accept the challenges of being in a top band program. They must play their instruments well and spend hours marching,” he said.
The members welcome the challenge. Kamaria Fletcher, 16, a senior from Parkland and a co-captain of the color guard, said, “We have four-hour practices three or four days a week, and we do homework. The hard work is worthwhile.”
Natalie Vargas, 17, a Parkland senior and co-captain of the color guard, loves the family aspect of the band. “We work hard together but are all very close friends,” she said.
Adam Rivero, 16, a junior of Coral Springs and brass captain, is proud of his fellow musicians and said the third-place award at Bands of America was a significant accomplishment for the band. “We are all dedicated to the band and work hard to practice,” he said.
The Eagle Regiment is preparing to compete in the Bands of America Grand National Championships on November 14-17 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. They will also participate in the Coral Springs Holiday Parade.
