Marjory Stoneman Douglas Baseball {954 Preps}
The greatest high School baseball team in the country resides in Parkland with Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
“It’s truly an honor anytime your true baseball peers, fellow coaches, name you National Champions,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. “When it comes from people you compete and battle against on a daily basis, it’s just more special.”
For the fourth time in the last five years, the Eagles were named National Champions following their historic season, which saw the team win their fifth straight State Championship. This season featured MSD, which had nine different players hit, including five from Lorenzo Laurel and Bennett Gary. Nick Diaz, Jake Rizzo, Drew Freeman, Gio Rojas, and Michael Ossenfort had at least two, while Raley and Matthew Toback had one.
MSD previously beat Alonso High School 5-0 in the State Semifinals behind a complete game shutout from Rojas. The left-hander completed the season 12-0 with a .72 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 68 innings. Tartaglia and Chase Wildroudt combined for 13 wins, while Breylynn Courtney had two wins with seven saves. Carter McGuinn also had a victory.
The Eagles finished the season 31-2, which also included them winning a BCAA District and Regional Championship. During their five-year run, MSD has won 144 of its 155 games. MSD will return several significant players next year, but will also see the graduation of Luke Cherry, Torres, Gary, Courtney, Freeman, Jonathan Rodriguez, Diaz, Gabe Rodrigo, Michael Ossenfort, Carter Wojcik, Wildroudt, Andrew Sarro, Payton Jay, and Tartaglia this spring.
Currently, 11 of these seniors are signed to play college baseball. Cherry, Torres, Gary, and Diaz all finished their high school careers with three State Titles. Courtney, Freeman, Rodriguez, Ossenfort, Sarro, and Jay won two titles, while Rodrigo, Wojcik, Wildroudt, and Tartaglia all won their first title.
“I couldn’t be happier for our players and coaching staff, Fitz-Gerald added. “We were a close-knit group who worked extremely hard to keep the tradition going by winning a state championship, “I’ve said it before, to win five straight, especially at a public school, is something that will never be done again.”
