Jesus Luzardo. {MSD Baseball}
Former Marjory Stoneman Douglas pitcher Jesus Luzardo was stellar in his first postseason start with the Philadelphia Phillies, despite taking the loss on Monday.
Luzardo, a 2016 graduate from MSD, pitched into the seventh inning and ultimately was charged with two runs despite both coming with him out of the game. Luzardo allowed only one hit in the first inning and retired 17 straight before allowing the first two baserunners to reach in the seventh.
After exiting the game, Orion Kerkering allowed the two inherited runners to score before allowing two more of his own. Despite the Phillies scoring one in the eighth and two in the ninth, they went on to lose 4-1 and fall to 0-2 in the best-of-five series against Los Angeles.
Luzardo was coming off a tremendous regular season, which featured the hard-throwing left-hander going 15-8 and a 3.92 ERA. He is currently in his seventh big league season and holds a 41-41 record. Luzardo also pitched in the big leagues for the Oakland Athletics and Miami Marlins while shining during his high school career with the Eagles.
Luzardo won 23 games with MSD and was selected in the third round of the MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. The series will now shift to Los Angeles with Game 3 set for Wednesday, October 8, at 8:08 p.m. Luzardo would be on regular rest should this series go the distance, with Game 5 set for Saturday, October 11, at 7:38 p.m.
