The Marjory Stoneman Douglas fall sports season continued with a dominant cross country performance, while football, volleyball, swimming, bowling, and golf were also in action.
The football team faced one of its toughest challenges of the season, falling 51-0 to Cypress Bay High School on August 18. The Lightning entered the matchup undefeated at 4-0 after outscoring their opponents 216-69 and continued their strong start with the shutout victory.
The Eagles followed that up with their homecoming game but fell 37-14. After trailing by a touchdown twice, Anthony Diaz broke free for a long touchdown run before Chase Pavlish scored another touchdown following a lateral from Diaz.
MSD dropped to 1-4, with its lone win coming against Coral Springs High School. The Eagles will face South Plantation High School in their next game on Friday, September 25 at 6 p.m. The Paladins are 3-3 this season, with victories over Plantation, Boca Raton, and J.P. Taravella, after finishing 6-5 last year.
The cross country team delivered a dominant performance at Quiet Waters Park, with both the boys and girls finishing first. Emiliana Anzures won the girls’ race, while Noa Norman, Antonella Dominguez, Caroline Schwartz and Sophia Zengotita rounded out the top five.
Alexander Spadaccini led the boys with a fifth-place finish, followed by Nicholas Rosenberg, Joshua Glasgow, Kaden Kirkpatrick and Jason Lemelman, who placed sixth through ninth, respectively. The win marked the Eagles’ second race of the season, after they swept their opening meet in Deerfield Beach.
The girls volleyball team also had a busy week, beginning with a four-set victory over Norland High School before falling to Cypress Bay. MSD then competed in the South Florida Showdown, dropping its first two matches against Calvary Christian Academy and Merritt Island before bouncing back with victories over Palm Beach Central and Oxbridge Academy. The Eagles will return to action against St. Thomas Aquinas High School on October 5 at 5:30 p.m.
The bowling team has reached the midway point of its season, with the boys and girls combining for more than 50 wins. Tejas Hierholzer leads the boys’ bowling team with a 174.7 average through 10 games, followed by Ralph Freed Jr. at 165.4 and Jacob Jimenez at 147.3.
