After being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB draft, Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate Coby Mayo reached an agreement with the organization.
Mayo, who resides in Coral Springs, signed for $1.775 million on Tuesday, July 7th at 3:00 p.m., which is over the slot value of $565,600 for the 103rd pick. He is also expected to be added to the 60-man player pool for this season and will be allowed to work out with the team after passing his physical on Monday, July 6th.
The reality of it all has not yet set in for Mayo, who has dreamed about playing professional baseball and is motivated to show it with the Baltimore Orioles.
“I’ll continue to play my hardest to let them know that they made a good decision in entrusting in me to continue to have such qualities in my work ethic for their organization both on and off the field,” Mayo said. “It is an honor for me to represent this ball club and a privilege to be amongst the rest of the Baltimore Orioles.”
Initially scheduled to play baseball at the University of Florida in 2021, after he signed the contract this commitment is void.
Mayo played on the varsity baseball team in Parkland for four seasons and led his team to 66 wins despite his senior season being cut short. While he was drafted as an infielder, Mayo may end up possibly moving to the outfield with his rocket of an arm.
If Mayo can make it to the MLB, he will become only the fifth player from Marjory Stoneman to play in the major leagues joining Matt Fox, Mike Caruso, Anthony Rizzo, and Jesus Luzardo.
