Parkland Mayor Rich Walker.
A Message from Mayor Rich Walker
Residents often reach out to a member of the City Commission to have their voices heard. When it is a City matter, it is handled as effectively and efficiently as possible. But even when the City is not responsible for something that concerns our Parkland residents, we know it is still important to you and we want to equip you with the right resources.
For example, Parkland residents use a number water services, including NSID, the City of Coconut Creek, and Parkland Utilities, the latter of which has a name that sometimes causes some confusion. While the City of Parkland does not have a water utility service – or any utility services, for that matter, we occasionally hear a lot from residents who believe the City of Parkland is responsible for Parkland Utilities, a privately owned utility service that has no affiliation with the City of Parkland.
It is logical – and human – to want fast answers, when it comes to water quality. The City of Parkland wants to help avoid the confusion and at the same time, offer helpful resources, if there are questions about any water utility.
Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
If water quality is in question, we encourage residents to contact the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The DEP has indicated the water quality of Parkland Utilities meets minimum standards. Ensuring the minimum standards are met or exceeded is the extent of DEP’s role and authority.
Florida Public Service Commission (PSC)
If water service or delivery is in question, we encourage residents to contact the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC). The PSC deals with delivery of service (or poor delivery of service), customer service (or lack of), efficiency (or inefficiency), ability of a water utility to quickly notify customers of the need to boil water, and much more. While the DEP addresses water quality, the PSC can address these other areas of service. The PSC can sanction, fine, remove certifications and licenses, and take measures to force a water utility into compliance.
How to Proceed
Residents can contact the DEP’s Drinking Water Division about water quality by calling 850-245-8486.
Residents can submit a formal complaint about delivery of water service (not water quality) to the PSC in the following ways:
Online: https://www.psc.state.fl.us/consumer-complaint-form
There are a number of environmental factors that can come into play during rainy season, and sometimes the pressure brought on by heavy rains can be part of that. When water issues bubble up, remember to contact the entities that can actually help get the answers you need to keep your family safe.
