Marjory Stoneman Douglas had an eventful week with various games, including senior nights and a team competing in the Regional Championship.
After finishing fourth in Districts, the MSD cheerleading team competed in Regionals on Friday at Coral Glades. The Eagles went up against 17 schools in the small non-tumbling division and placed second to qualify for the State Finals automatically.
They also honored their seniors earlier this month in Annabelle Civalero, Lawrence Morantus, Cameron Shavelson, and Macy Meis.
Boys soccer held Senior Night against Coral Springs High School on Thursday in their final game of the regular season and won.
They honored Jeyveer Selveraj, Dillon Morozov. Joaquin Guerrero, Henrique Smith, Soren Chris Jacobsen, Lukas Avila, and Daniel Tiplea to finish 5-5-3 before the District Playoffs start. CSHS fell to 6-6-3 in their final game.
Coming off a win against St. Thomas Aquinas High School, with Gianna Rizzo scoring the only goal, the girl’s soccer team recognized seniors Neima Bien-Aime, Katelyn Campanella, Lilly Conn, Morgan Goldman, and Layla Segelnick before winning 7-0 against Coral Springs High School.
That was the Eagles’ seventh win of the season as Segelnick recorded a hat-trick. The Lady Colts finished 10-3-1, which is the most wins they have had in over a decade.
Boys basketball will play on senior night in their next home game but they had a busy week beginning on Martin Luther King Jr. Day against Westminister Christian High School. However, they lost 59-54 before losing against Cooper City High School.
Former MSD basketball star Abbey Hsu received her 11th Conference Player of the Week Award and was also named to Becky Hammon’s Mid-Major Watch List. She averaged 22 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in their last two games with wins over Cornell and Yale.
The current girls basketball team lost 65-25 against South Broward High School on Thursday and are now 4-8 this year. Next, the Eagles will play Olympic Heights Community High School on Monday, January 22, at 6 p.m. before their senior night game against Pompano Beach on January 29 at 6 p.m.
The wrestling team held senior night on Wednesday and also honored the late wrestling coach Chris Hixon. The seniors were Grace MacKenzie, Elizabeth Velasco, Gaby Caro, Naeem Chenery, Evan Ng, and Caleb Hebert, while MSD won both of their matches.
T he hockey team also had senior night and won 5-0 against Cypress Bay High School. Artem Velmakin, Ethan Pakhomov, Nathan Shelowitz, Luke Colton, Braeden Kravitz, Zohaib Ashrafali and Ethan Blansky were all recognized.
They play North Broward Prep on Sunday, facing a team that is 17-0 in games in Florida. They have also outscored their opponents 126-14 and have beaten MSD in all their previous meetings this year.
