The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of North Broward, held on April 5 at the Coral Springs Sportsplex, brought together hundreds of participants, raising nearly $148,000 to support cancer research and patient care.
Organizers originally set a fundraising goal of $135,000 but raised it to $150,000 leading up to the event. With donations still coming in, they are just shy of their updated goal. The Relay season continues through the summer, giving teams additional time to contribute.
“This year’s event was incredible,” said organizer Chris Fletcher. “We are hopeful we’ll reach our target before the season ends.”
The event drew an estimated 750 attendees, including 115 cancer survivors and caregivers. A total of 45 teams participated in fundraising efforts.
Now in its 40th year, Relay For Life was inspired by Dr. Gordy Klatt’s 24-hour marathon in 1985 and has since raised $6.8 billion globally in the fight against cancer.
This year’s theme, “Leveling Up For 40 Years—Game Over, Cancer,” included a Survivors’ Lap, a complimentary dinner for survivors and caregivers, and a moving Luminaria ceremony at sunset to remember those lost and honor those still battling the disease.
Fundraising continues through August. For more information or to contribute, visit:
