Four years ago, Roman Anthony was playing high school baseball at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and helped the Eagles clinch the second of what would become five straight state championships.
Now, the 2022 graduate from MSD represented Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, playing on a roster that included stars such as Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper, along with many of the world’s best players.
After appearing in two exhibition games against the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies, Anthony batted seventh and played left field in Team USA’s opening game, a 15–5 win over Brazil on March 7. He finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two walks before adding another hit and a walk in a 9–1 win over the Great Britain national baseball team on March 8.
Anthony’s first signature moment came in the team’s third game, which featured a three-run homer to lift the USA to a 5-3 win over Mexico. After dropping their only game to Italy, the USA still managed to advance following Italy’s win over Mexico, and Anthony hit a game-winning home run in the Semifinals against the Dominican Republic, but the USA then lost the final 3-2 to Venezuela and was recognized on the All-Tournament Team.
Anthony is currently a member of the Boston Red Sox and is preparing for the first season of his eight-year, $130 million contract. The deal includes a $5 million signing bonus and can reach as much as $230 million through performance-based escalators, keeping him under team control through 2034.
Anthony was selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft. The All-American hit .545 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs as a senior and finished his high school career with 15 home runs and 62 RBIs. He was also named Florida’s Gatorade Player of the Year after helping the Eagles post a 30–2 record.
Anthony quickly rose through the minor leagues, becoming baseball’s top overall prospect before making his Major League debut in July. In 71 games at the big-league level, he hit eight home runs and drove in 32 RBIs. During his time at MSD, Anthony totaled 15 home runs, 20 doubles, and 61 RBIs across two seasons before being selected in the draft. He later added 42 career minor league home runs and 170 RBIs before reaching the majors.
