A Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate and self-proclaimed civil servant has organized a solidarity walk for the Parkland and Coral Springs community.
Kadeem Rowe, 26, a Coral Springs resident since the age of nine, attended MSD, where he served as the senior class president in 2013.
He proposed a peaceful protest to raise awareness of systemic racism in America and police violence against the black community while giving residents a safe space to share.
“In light of all that is going on, I want to ensure that we are promoting an environment of belongingness where all of our residents can feel safe, both physically and emotionally,” said Rowe.
On Saturday, June 20, residents can safely gather as a community against systemic racism and stand for racial equality during the public demonstration, which will culminate near Coral Springs City Hall at 9551 Sample Road.
On social media, Rowe said the protest would allow the community to showcase their diversity and promote unity within the Parkland and Coral Springs community.
Beginning at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School at 3 p.m., attendees should come prepared with masks and plan to practice social distancing.
Organizers will be providing water and snacks at rest stations; however, they ask that protestors come prepared and stay hydrated. Signs are encouraged, and there will be periods allowing free speech and expression of personal experiences.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office in Parkland and the Coral Springs Police Department will be present to block traffic at major intersections, if necessary; however, they will not be involved in the protest.
Anybody who would like to help the community support racial equality and uphold human rights is invited to attend the march. Interested volunteers should simply join the Facebook event and reach out to a host to see how they can help.
