The Temple of Time, a public art installation that has captured interest from visitors far and wide, is set to be burned Sunday night and Coral Springs city officials believe thousands will be watching the event.

The first of a five-part series entitled: Inspiring Community Healing After Gun Violence: The Power of Art, David Best, his team and community volunteers began building the structure in January, and by the first anniversary of the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, opened it to the public. Since then, the temple has been covered in messages of grief, hope, love, and support for the victims and their families.

Those who wish to be a part of the cathartic act of burning the temple have the following public parking options: at the new city hall parking garage, Village Square Plaza and Bank of America parking lot, located next to the Financial building. Those who have respiratory issues should avoid attending in-person.

Beginning at 7 p.m., Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook and Parkland Mayor Christine Hunschofsky will speak and MSD families who will be present at the burn are the Dworet, Hixon and Montalto’s.

There will be a 30-foot perimeter set around the temple and Sample Road will be closed from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday evening from Coral Hills Drive to University Drive. Motorists traveling through the area are asked to use alternate routes and be cognizant of pedestrian traffic while city officials work to create a safe event for the community.

Designed to release some of the pain left inside a community that continues to heal, The Temple of Time was made possible by Bloomberg Philanthropies, which awarded $1 million to the City of Coral Springs in partnership with the City of Parkland and Coral Springs Museum of Art as part of the 2018 Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge.

The opening remarks and ceremonial burn will be televised on Coral Springs City TV, channel 725 on Blue Stream and Chanel 99 on U-Verse. The temple is located at 9551 West Sample Road.
