A man from Virginia has been taken into custody and faces charges of assault and battery following an incident where he tackled a minor accused of pointing a laser at a party he was attending.
On Saturday, March 23, the Broward Sheriff’s Office responded to an altercation involving an adult male and a group of juveniles near the gatehouse of the Cypress Head development.
According to the caller, the assault on a minor had occurred, with two juveniles involved in the altercation with an adult visitor of a home near the 7500 block of South Cypresshead Drive.
Upon arrival, officers were greeted by the caller, the neighborhood security guard, a juvenile who suffered minor injuries during the confrontation, and an adult male, later identified as Glenn Mouritzen, 57, of Virginia.
According to the report, witnesses and the victims claimed Mouritzen had confronted the juveniles over their use of a laser pointer, which he claimed they were pointing toward members of a nearby party.
The situation escalated when Mouritzen, allegedly hiding near some bushes, waited for them to continue to point the laser, then physically tackled one of the juveniles. He allegedly then forcibly escorted the teen to the gatehouse by pulling their hair, under the belief that their behavior warranted security intervention.
One of the juvenile’s friends attempted to intervene but was allegedly assaulted with an elbow strike from Mouritzen.
Mouritzen was apprehended at the neighborhood clubhouse, a short distance from his attending party.
During the arrest, Mouritzen admitted to the physical assault but justified his actions as a response to the juveniles’ use of the laser pointer.
The juvenile victim received on-site medical attention for the injuries sustained during the assault. Following the incident, both juveniles and their parents pressed charges against Mouritzen.
Mouritzen was transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
