Two students from the National Academy Foundation at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School won first place in the national KnoPro NAF Academy of Finance’s “Behind the Screen: AI, Cybersecurity, and Social Media Challenge.”
MSD students Dhruv Mutha and Kevin Chen will split a $10,000 prize for their innovative project, which tackled bias in scanning software using artificial intelligence.
KnoPro is a free, web-based platform developed by the national education nonprofit NAF. It’s designed to provide high school students with the opportunity to gain real-world professional experience by solving challenges faced by actual businesses and organizations.
The challenge, funded by an anonymous donor, invited high school students across the country to imagine solutions that make social media safer, more fun, and scam-free.
Dhruv and Kevin’s winning idea stood out for its timely relevance and practical application.
“Our project focused on using AI to detect bias in scanning software, and it was amazing to see how innovation and purpose can come together to create impactful solutions. I’m grateful to NAF for providing a platform that empowers students to turn ideas into action.”Dhruv Mutha told Parkland Talk.
Participants in the competition were invited to design groundbreaking products, launch creative campaigns, or develop new business ideas that creatively leveraged AI and cybersecurity to meet the specific goals outlined in the rules.
NAF Vice President of Product and Innovation Lindsey Dixon praised all participants, saying in a press release, “We thank you for your dynamic ideas and solutions, which will help ensure that the world of social media is safe and productive for all users.”
As for what’s next for the winners, Dhruv tells Parkland Talk that he plans to pursue a career in finance and economics, while Kevin shared that he aims to study engineering and computer science. And with an eye to the future, Dhruv says the experience has impacted how he plans to go about his passions in AI.
“Competing in and winning the KNO Pro Challenge was an incredible experience that pushed me to think creatively about how AI can solve real-world problems.”
