The tradition of excellence at Marjory Stoneman Douglas continues long after graduation, as several former Eagles are reaching major milestones in their baseball careers.
Devin Fitz-Gerald earned a promotion from the Wilmington Blue Rocks (High-A) to the Harrisburg Senators (Double-A) while also being recognized as one of the Top 100 prospects in Major League Baseball.
A four-time State Champion and three-time National Champion during his high school career at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Fitz-Gerald is playing his first full professional season after being selected in the fifth round of the MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers.
This season, Fitz-Gerald has already doubled his previous home run total, launching 13 long balls, including his first with his new team on Thursday while driving in 39 runs this season. He has also showcased his speed on the bases, stealing 11 bags this year and 19 in his professional career.
Jayden Dubanewicz also earned a promotion to High-A with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers after beginning the season in Low-A. The 16th-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 20 innings this season after going 9-4 with a 2.37 ERA during his high school career.
Rolando Lujo is officially a professional baseball player after signing a contract with the Grand Junction Jackalopes of the Pecos League.
“It feels amazing to get this opportunity and to get to continue doing what I love after college,” Lujo said.
Lujo was a member of the Eagles’ 2021 State Championship Team, helping the program capture the first of what has now become six consecutive State Titles. During his senior season, he batted .271 with one home run, six doubles, one triple, and 15 RBIs. The Eagles also went on to win a National Championship that year.
Following high school, Lujo continued his baseball career at Erskine College before transferring to the University of Fort Lauderdale. He enjoyed a standout senior season, batting .405 with eight home runs and 60 RBIs while establishing himself as one of the top hitters in the program for the second straight season.Â
Baseball success runs in the family for Lujo. His grandfather, Rennie Stennett, was a World Series champion with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His younger brother, Rylan Lujo, has also emerged as one of the top professional prospects with the University of Georgia. After being named to the First Team All-SEC, he earned a spot on the postseason SEC 1st Team and is set to play in the College World Series with the University of Georgia.Â
Sam Beir was there for the birth of one dynasty and the continuation of another, recording the final out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ first of six straight state titles before helping the University of Tampa win a historic third consecutive national championship.
He pitched in eight games this season, going 1-1 and also recording three saves. He posted an ERA of 1.37 and struck out 23 hitters in only 19.1 innings. Beir’s success began in high school, when the right-hander went 3-0 as a junior and posted a 2.62 ERA.
He went on to add two saves and, after missing his senior year, started out at Florida Atlantic University, then transferred to Indian River State College, where he went 5-0 before helping Tampa win its 11th National Championship in school history.Â
