The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team held Senior Night on Tuesday before the team’s 21st straight win against Hialeah Educational Academy to start the season.
The Eagles honored Alex Lazar, Jacob Herzberg, Christian Rodriguez, Jacob Gomberg, Dillon Moquin, Matt Ossenfort, Cayden Freels, Jackson Abram. All eight players have been signed to play college baseball, while seven have won at least one State and National Championship. In his first year with MSD, Ossenfort currently ranks fourth in the state with six home runs.
“This senior class is special. They have been with me for four years with the exception of Matt, but man, what a great kid and teammate,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. “I only wish these guys the best moving forward, but we have unfinished business to take care of, and I believe we can do it. This is a special group.”
However, the lone home run from the seniors came from Freels, who recorded the first of his varsity career. Rylan Lujo also homered, with Rodriguez, Gavin Garguilo, and Ossenfort coming for the shutout, striking out 11. Abram and Devin Fitz-Gerald also combined for three RBIs.
“It couldn’t have been a more special night for me as well as the other seniors, Freels said. “Knowing this is my last high school home game and that I executed to the best of my ability makes it all the more special. Perfect way to end things. It was a great team win, and now we focus on playoffs.”
MSD is now 21-0 and ranks as the number two team in the country. They will play one more final regular season game on Thursday against American Heritage at 6:30 p.m. before their postseason run, where MSD looks to become the first public school to win three straight State Championships.
The Eagles will start as the top seed in the District, have a bye in the opening round of the District Championship, and face the winner of Monarch and Spanish River Community High School. Boca Raton Community High School also has a bye as the two seed and will play the winner of Coral Springs High School and Olympic Heights.
