A fundraising effort is underway to help the family of a 16-year-old Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student found dead earlier this week, according to organizers.
Maxim “Max” Georgiev, an 11th grader and member of the school’s swim team, died from an apparent suicide in Coral Springs Monday, authorities said.
“Max was a brilliant, talented, and kind-hearted boy. He enjoyed snowboarding and was an excellent pianist and swimmer” who excelled in academics, states the GoFundMe page, which was launched by a group identified online as the Kosheba-Jorgensen family, neighbors of the Georgievs.
“As a tight-knit family, Max had so much love for his parents, Mila and Georgi, his big sister Diana, and his little brother Leo, 14, who all love him deeply and are suffering through this loss,” the page states. “He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, including his friends and the rest of his family, not to mention all the missed opportunities that come with the level of potential Max held.”
Money donated through the fundraiser will go toward paying for funeral arrangements and lost wages while the teen’s family “takes time to mourn.”
The campaign had raised more than $5,000 toward its $25,000 goal as of Wednesday afternoon.
“Please help us pour love and support onto them as they navigate this tragic loss,” the fundraiser’s organizers wrote.
Georgiev was found dead in the 9500 block of Westview Drive, according to Coral Springs Police, which did not identify him by name.
A police spokesman said the fatal injury appeared to be self-inflicted but declined to release additional details.
Police said the boy was found dead Monday, while school officials said the discovery was made Sunday.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office was investigating the teen’s disappearance as a missing person’s case before his body was discovered.
A date for his funeral service has not yet been announced.
