Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball continues to shine, with two former players signing MLB contracts and another graduate set to be called to the Major Leagues by the Baltimore Orioles.
Devin Fitz-Gerald, a fifth-round pick for the Texas Rangers, had to decide whether to sign a big-league contract or attend NC State for college. The four-time State champion opted to sign with the Rangers for $900,000, more than the projected slot value of $338,700 and will begin his quest to the Major Leagues for the reigning World Series Champions.
Fitz-Gerald hit .397 in high school with 11 home runs and 63 RBIs. He was named an All-American by Max Preps, the American Baseball Coaches Association, and the National High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Jayden Dubanewicz was picked in the 16th round by the Milwaukee Brewers but decided to sign for $665,500, well above the projected slot value for the 485th pick of $165,000. He will not attend the University of Florida. Dubanewicz went 12-0 for MSD during his sophomore and junior years, helping the Eagles win a pair of State and National Championships. As a senior, Dubanewicz went on to go 7-2 with an era of 1.52.
Former MSD star Coby Mayo was officially called up to the Major Leagues by the Baltimore Orioles. Currently the 15th-ranked prospect in baseball, Mayo is set to be active for the first time for Balitimore’s game against the Cleveland Guardians Friday Night.
A 2020 graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Mayo shined in high school, hitting 13 home runs and scoring 61 runs. Later that year, he was picked in the fourth round of the MLB Draft and quickly blossomed his way up through the minor leagues. In 378 minor league games, Mayo hit 80 home runs and drove in 276 runs. He was named the Eastern League’s Most Valuable Player for the 2023 season and was hitting .308 with 23 home runs this year in the minors this year.
The Orioles are set to play the second of their four-game series against the Guardians. The Orioles will be facing veteran pitcher Carlos Carrasco. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
