Marjory Stoneman Douglas Competes in Playoffs for 3rd Straight Season

After another excellent season for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas football team, the Eagles held their annual banquet to hand out awards.

The Eagles went 6-3 in the regular season before reaching the State Playoffs and falling to Western High School.

Offensive MVP

While MSD had several players go down with injuries, one player who remained healthy all year and shined was running back Matthew Wilson. He finished the season with 938 yards on 123 carries and won offensive MVP. Wilson scored 11 rushing touchdowns and had four games of at least 100 yards on the ground, including 164 against Monarch High School. Wilson also caught nine catches for 84 yards this year.

Defensive MVP

MSD had a pair of players shine defensively in Luke Evans and Chris Cepeda. Evans, who already has offers to several Power-5 schools, recorded four interceptions. He often covered the opposing team’s top receiver and had 17 tackles and 13 passes defended.

For Cepeda, he had arguably the biggest defensive play of the season. He recorded a 103-yard pick-six against Coral Glades in their victory. He also finished the season with four interceptions and had 26 tackles and a sack.

Most Improved Player

Hunter Rose won the most improved player., He stepped in and shined at quarterback after Ryan Spallina suffered a season-ending injury in only the third game. He ended the year throwing for 554 yards with two touchdowns. He also added three more scores rushing, including a 30-yard run.

Aaron Feis Scholarship

A large part of his success goes to Aris Skarecki, who committed to Keiser University. He received the Aaron Feis Scholarship and became the sixth Eagle to play college football next fall. He also appeared in the Broward-Miami-Dade and SWFL vs. SFL Sandviper All-Star Game.

Student-Athlete of the Year

Lastly, it was a historic season for kicker Kelly Ferber after becoming the first female ever to score in school history, making an extra point against South Plantation High School. She also had one during the Eagles’ win over Coral Springs High School and was the winner of the Student-Athlete of the Year with her 5.03.

While MSD has 28 players set to graduate, they return many key contributors and will see multiple junior varsity athletes compete during the 2022 season.
