The Marjory Stoneman Douglas quest for a State Champion ended on Wednesday following their loss to Cypress Bay High School in the Regional Final.
Coming into the postseason, 8-1-6, the Eagles won two games in the District Tournament, outscoring their opponents 9-0 following wins against Wester and Spanish River Community High School. They entered the Regional Tournament as the third seed and advanced in penalty kicks following a win over Doral Academy.
MSD pitched their fourth straight shutout following a 2-0 win over Wellington High School before a rematch against Cypress Bay High School. The Lightning came into the game with only one loss all year, which came against the Eagles on November 13, but recorded a 2-1 win, with Audrey Haltiwanger scoring the only goal for MSD.
Head coach Laura Rountree said she was disappointed with how it ended but credited Cypress Bay for their play.
“I was proud that the girls fought hard and never gave up,” Rountree said. The season, with our very tough schedule, allowed us to prepare, learn, grow, and compete to get better.”
The Eagles finished the season 12-2-6 and had their only other loss this year come against American Heritage High School. They ended the year as the 12th-ranked team in Florida and ranked 14th nationally, while Alexa Jourdan led in goals with 10. Breanna Gordon and Laina Engelhardt each had five, while Emma McGregor and Courtney Heymach scored four.
MSD finished the season with 45 goals and allowed only 13 behind tremendous goaltending from Ella Stevens. She will graduate this year along with Sophia Dal Molin, Grace Dkystra, Laina Engelbart, Morgan Melchiorri, Taylor Le, and McGregor.
“The girls trained and played very hard every day and made great strides forward with many successful moments to celebrate along the way,” Rountree added. “It was an honor and blessing being their coach and a joy to see them every weekday.”
