The postseason is underway for Marjory Stoneman Douglas, highlighted by teams competing in Regionals, District Tournaments, and the Big-8 Championship.
The baseball team opened Regionals in dominant fashion, as they pursue a sixth straight state championship, cruising to a 17-0 win in just four innings. The Eagles powered the offense with three home runs. Cade Raley led off the game with a homer, while Reid Dadic and Randy Ruiz also went deep. Ander Elorriaga returned to the starting lineup and drove in three runs, while Gio Rojas added three RBIs and struck out seven in three scoreless innings. He also had immaculate inning which featured Rojas striking out the side on nine pitches. Drew Boivin recorded two strikeouts in his lone inning of work. They will now face Southwest High School in the Regional Semifinals with Game 1 set for Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m.
The softball team competed in the Big-8 Tournament, which features the top eight teams in Broward County. After the opening day was rained out, the Eagles played two games on Tuesday. Despite dropping both contests, they managed to score 13 total runs. Rebecca Perez drove in three runs during an 11-6 loss to Pembroke Pines Charter, while Myah Boleen led the offense with two RBIs in their second game against West Broward High School.
The flag football team advanced to the District Championship Game after a dominant 31-0 win over Cypress Bay High School. AB Puccio threw four touchdown passes, while Audrey Haltiwanger caught two of them. Caitlyn Taylor and Elaina Garzon also found the end zone. On defense, Mickayla Sugrano, Elaina Garzon, and Elisabeth Garzon each recorded interceptions.
MSD fell just short in the championship game, losing 12-6 to Western High School. The two teams previously met earlier this season, with Western winning 27-18, and will face each other again in Regionals on Wednesday, April 29 at 6 p.m.
The girls lacrosse team earn the second seed at Regionals and knocked off Miami Palmetto High School 14-7. Chloe Resnik led the way with five goals while Noa Capistrano scored three and both Patricia Phang and Aubrey Kasen each had two. They will player Beach High School in their next game on Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m.
The boys volleyball team entered Regionals as the fourth seed but fell in a tightly contested five-set match against Olympic Heights Community High School (25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 16-14). The Eagles wrapped up their season with three wins, including victories over Piper, Boyd H. Anderson, and Coral Springs High School.
The tennis team competed at Regionals, with the girls winning on Tuesday against West Broward High School before falling to Cypress Bay High School. Still, Dhea Bgarithan will compete at the state championship in singles and doubles with Zara Risavy. The boys’ team lost their Regional and will compete at the State Championship.
