The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball program has already started seeing members of its 2027 senior class make their college decisions, with Josh Sullivan officially committing to Coker University.
Sullivan said the opportunity to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level is something he has worked toward for years.
“I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to continue playing the game I love,” Sullivan said. “I know not everyone gets this chance, so I don’t take it for granted. I’m excited about what is ahead and competing at the collegiate level.”
Sullivan first picked up a baseball at around four years old while playing with North Springs Little League, where he developed his passion for the game. He later played travel baseball with the Parkland Pokers before joining the Original Florida Pokers.
After spending two seasons on the junior varsity team at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Sullivan earned a spot on the varsity roster and was part of the Eagles’ sixth consecutive State Championship team this past spring. He made three appearances on the mound during the championship season.
Sullivan said being part of one of the nation’s premier high school baseball programs has had a lasting impact on him, both as a player and as a person. He credited head coach Todd Fitz-Gerald and assistant coaches Mike Cimiluca and Von Stertzbach for helping shape his development on and off the field.
“Being part of the Stoneman Douglas baseball program is a privilege earned and not given,” Sullivan said. “The impact on me, both as a player and as a person, is immeasurable.”
Sullivan said the program taught him how to handle adversity, be accountable, and respond when things do not go his way. He added that the program’s sustained success is a reflection of the coaches’ preparation and the commitment every player makes to maintaining the program’s standard.
When it came time to choose a college, Sullivan said Coker University stood out because of its strong baseball program, the coaching staff’s belief in his potential, and their clear plan for his continued development. Academics also played a significant role in his decision, as he believes the university will prepare him for life after baseball. He was also drawn to the close-knit community in Hartsville, where he feels he can stay focused on academics, baseball, and becoming the best version of himself.
With one final high school season remaining, Sullivan said the senior class is determined to continue the championship tradition established by those who came before them.
“I’m proud of what the program has accomplished, but for all of us seniors, our focus is on 2027 and what we must do to continue the winning tradition,” Sullivan said. “We owe it to ourselves, our coaches and the players that came before us.”
