Sam Beir {Jillian Jarboe}
Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate Sam Beir is set to continue his college baseball career at the University of Tampa.
Beir says his decision was a no-brainer, considering the background of their baseball program, the beautiful campus, the location, and the coaches, who were most passionate about winning ball games.
“I’ve had the craving of being on a team that has done this just like the team I was on at Stoneman Douglas,” Beir said. “The amount of excitement and fun you have while playing for something as big as this is truly insurmountable.”
Beir, who closed out the first of five straight State Championships for Marjory Stoneman Douglas, began his college career at Florida Atlantic and also played with Indian River State University.
In high school, Beir went 3-0 as a junior and pitched to an ERA of 2.62. He went on to add two more saves in his high school career before missing the majority of his senior year with an injury.
Beir said that the ongoing injuries he had throughout his senior year and freshman year of college were extremely debilitating.
“Although it was a rough time for me, this eventually led to me pushing myself harder than ever to get back to where I am right now,” Beir added. “ I got after it in the weight room, which was and has been a big part of me being able to stay healthy. “
During his first year at Indian River, he had two wins and added three saves. He pitched 26.1 innings a season ago and had a 3.08 ERA before going 5-0, striking out 34 hitters in 37.1 innings. Beir will join a college team that has won the last two Division II National Championships. They have 10 in school history and have produced several big league players.
