Dr. Sharry Kimmel, a 30-year education veteran and former Broward County Teacher of the Year, has received the endorsement of Parkland’s mayor and the entire City Commission in her bid for the Broward County School Board District 4 seat.
Parkland Mayor Rich Walker announced the endorsement, citing Kimmel’s long-standing service and experience in education.
“Dr. Kimmel has been a pillar of our community for years,” Walker said. “As an educator, former principal, and lifelong education advocate, our city would be well served by her experience and leadership.”
Kimmel has also been endorsed by Parkland commissioners Neil Kanterman, Jordan Isrow, Simeon Brier, and Cindy Salamone.
She announced her campaign earlier this week alongside incumbent School Board member Lori Alhadeff, who formally endorsed Kimmel as her replacement.
“I am honored and humbled by the outpouring of support from my hometown community,” Kimmel said. “I will work tirelessly every day to ensure that we continue prioritizing student safety, improving quality teacher retention, and eliminating the financial mismanagement that has plagued our School Board for far too long.”
Kimmel’s career spans more than three decades in public education. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Miami, and a doctorate in child, youth, and family studies from Nova Southeastern University.
Her teaching career began in Miami-Dade County before moving to Broward County, where she was named Broward County Teacher of the Year in 1996 for her work with gifted students at Pembroke Lakes Elementary. Her classroom, known as the “Discovery Crew,” gained recognition for creative, immersive learning projects.
Kimmel later transitioned into administration and higher education, serving as the founding assistant principal of The Sagemont School and directing grants and programs for the South Florida Annenberg Challenge, where she managed a $100 million matching grant initiative.
For the past 22 years, she has served as a professor of teacher education at Broward College, earning two endowed teaching chairs and founding the first community college chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education. She also serves as a faculty senator.
A Parkland resident since 2019, Kimmel is president of the Parkland Friends of the Library and a member of the city’s Community Advisory Board. She previously served as the first HOA president of the Cascata community and helped lead local initiatives supporting families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kimmel has been married for nearly 35 years and has two adult sons, Daniel and Jonathan.
