Fire management officials at the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge have announced a prescribed burn scheduled for Thursday, April 17, through Saturday, April 19, 2025.
Approximately 20,000 acres of the refuge’s interior will be burned as part of ongoing efforts to improve wildlife habitat and manage invasive plant species.
According to officials, weather conditions are currently favorable to proceed with the burn, which is a routine and necessary conservation tool used to mimic the natural role of fire in the Everglades ecosystem.
While all canals and boat ramps within the refuge will remain open to the public during the operation, the popular canoe trail will be closed for safety reasons.
Smoke from the burn will be visible throughout western Palm Beach County. However, officials note that winds are expected to carry the smoke southwest, away from populated areas.
A map provided by refuge officials highlights the targeted burn area, which includes land surrounding and northwest of Lee Road, and several miles north of the Strazzulla Marsh Unit.
For updates on refuge access and conditions during the burn, visitors are encouraged to check www.fws.gov or follow the refuge’s social media channels.
