Marjory Stoneman Douglas had five teams going for District Championships this week and had three win a title.
Baseball
The baseball team beat Western High School after an 18-strikeout performance from Daniel Tartaglia in the District Semifinals. Gio Rojas was dominant once again, tossing six dominant innings, pitching his best when it mattered most. The game was scoreless until the fourth when Brody Gargiulo, who came in as a courtesy runner, scored the first run on a wild pitch. Rojas went on to strand two base runners in the sixth, ending the inning with his eighth strikeout of the game.
The Eagles had seven hits, including three from Michael Ossenfort. Bennett Gary, Jake Rizzo, Drew Freeman, and Rojas all had had one. Breylynn Courtney came in and walked the leadoff batter, but came back and struck out the next two hitters before getting the final batter to fly out to right field.
The Eagles will likely be the top seed in Regionals, as they are 23-2 this year. MSD also ranks third in the state and eighth in the nation, and they are looking to win their fifth straight State Championship.
Tennis
Both the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams won District Championships. The boys’ team had a terrific regular season, winning 41 of their 56 matches and six team victories. They beat South Broward, Pompano Beach, Cardinal Gibbons, Coral Springs High School, Charles W. Flahagan, and Deerfield Beach.
The girls’ team, led by Sacred Heart commit Savita Bagirithan, won all eight matches this season. Despite the boys losing to Cypress Bay and Pine Crest School, the girls’ team knocked off those teams while winning 45 of its 49 matches during the regular season.
Flag Football
The flag football team went undefeated in the regular season and knocked off Monarch High School 28-0 in their first playoff game behind four passing touchdowns from Samatha Calavetta. He also had 217 yards through the air while Aubrey Haltiwanger scored two touchdowns. Courtney Heymach and Savannah Tenore each had one.
In the final, the Eagles dropped their first game of the season against Western High School. The Wilcast, who came in as the ninth-ranked team in Florida, scored the only touchdown in the second half and won 6-0. Tenore had an interception late in the game, but the Eagles were unable to get into the end zone.
The Eagles were coming off a District Championship last season, their first since 2010. They will continue their season in Regionals. They will wait to see who they will face.
Girls Lacrosse
On Tuesday, the girls’ lacrosse team reached the final but lost 13-4 against St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The Eagles were seeded second in the District and knocked off Western High School 19-8 in their first playoff game, which featured nine goals from Kaitlin Irwin.
The Eagles are currently 9-7 and will likely be headed to Regionals for the sixth straight season. Last year, MSD won not only the District Championship but also a Regional Title before falling to Plant High School in the State Semifinals.
