Broward County Public Schools is celebrating two seniors recognized among the nation’s top academic scholars after being named Corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship recipients by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Among the honorees is Alyssa Rapps, a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who received the National Merit Motorola Solutions Scholarship.
Also earning the distinction is Ziyue Xu, a senior at Cypress Bay High School, who was awarded the same scholarship.
The students were selected from a highly competitive pool of National Merit finalists who met the criteria established by corporate sponsors. Approximately 115 corporations, foundations, and business organizations fund these scholarships, supporting students who may be children of employees, residents of communities served by the companies, or those pursuing fields the sponsors aim to promote.
Most Corporate-sponsored awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, providing annual stipends ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. Some recipients receive a one-time award between $2,500 and $10,000. Scholarships may be used at any regionally accredited college or university in the United States.
Since its inception, more than $892 million has been invested to support academically talented students nationwide.
Additional National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the coming months, including recipients of $2,500 scholarships on May 13, followed by college-sponsored awards on June 3 and July 13.
