U.S. Rep Jared Moskowitz.
In the wake of a “shocking increase in antisemitic violence,” including the firebombing attack on a Colorado Jewish group, U.S. Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) on Tuesday urged President Donald Trump to launch an investigation into designating the Muslim Brotherhood a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).
Moskowitz, a Parkland resident, argued the FTO designation would align U.S. policy with that of key international partners, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, all of which legally classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group.
“Taking steps to investigate and designate the Muslim Brotherhood as an FTO would enhance the ability of U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies to disrupt financial networks and recruitment activities connected to its affiliates,” Moskowitz wrote in a letter to Trump.
Moskowitz’s appeal to the president came two days after an Egyptian national illegally living in the U.S. used lit Molotov cocktails to firebomb a Boulder, Colorado Jewish group demonstrating for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Sixteen people were burned in the antisemitic firebombing, which the FBI called a “targeted terrorist attack.”
The Boulder attack, coming less than two weeks after an anti-Israel radical fatally shot a couple as they left the Washington D.C. Jewish Museum, has intensified concerns over rising antisemitism in the U.S..
In his letter, Moskowitz linked the increase in antisemitic violence to “ideological influence [that] not only fosters division but also encourages radicalization against the United States, our allies, and the foundational principles that define our societies.”
The congressman, who is Jewish and represents many Jewish constituents, has been a forceful voice against the surge in Jew-hatred unleashed by Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attacks on Israel and the Gaza war that ensued.
Both the Colorado bomber and the D.C. Jewish museum shooter shouted “Free Palestine” at the respective crime scenes, and both are believed to have been motivated by hatred of Jews and Israel, according to federal authorities.
Egyptian state media has painted the Colorado firebomber, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, as having a connection to the Muslim Brotherhood. The organization was founded in Egypt.
Moskowitz said the Muslim Brotherhood has a documented history of promoting extremist ideologies and supporting terrorism through various affiliated groups, including Hamas. The Palestinian terrorist group is already a designated FTO under U.S. law, government records show.
Numerous nations have labeled the Muslim Brotherhood terrorists and banned them due to the threat they pose to the region, according to Moskowitz.
Egypt designated the group a terrorist organization in 2013. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates both followed suit in 2014. And the Bahraini government has said the Muslim Brotherhood’s plans represent a clear terrorist threat to the kingdom’s security, according to Moskowitz.
Under an Austrian law passed in 2021, it is illegal to possess or distribute the Brotherhood’s literature or symbols in the country.
Moskowitz said the U.S. review of the issue should be done lawfully and “based on the best available intelligence and interagency cooperation.”
