The dominant run for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team continued, with the Eagles winning their third straight Regional Championship to advance to States.
After going 22-0 in the regular season, MSD won two games to win the District Championship. They then faced Monarch in the opening game Regionals and won 11-1. Niko Benestad had a grand slam, and Christian Rodriguez also homered and picked up the win.
MSD then took on J.P. Taravella in the Regional Seminflad for the second straight year and dominated with a 13-3 win. Matt Ossenfort homered twice and also drove in six runs, while Devin Fitz Gerald knocked in three. Jayden Dubanewicz earned the win, with Gavin Gargiulo recording the final nine puts to register the save.
MSD then dominated Christopher Columbus High School in the final on Tuesday. The Eagles scored nine second-inning runs, highlighted by home runs from Benestad, Ossenfort, and Alex Rodriguez. Benestad and Ossenfort also recorded RBI hits, with Jackson Abram tripling in a run.
MSD tacked on one more run in the sixth, with Jacob Herzberg scoring on a past ball after coming in to run after Christian hit a triple. Christian also threw another gem for the Eagles to earn the win, allowing only one run in six innings before Gargiulo tossed the seventh.
“I couldn’t be happier for the players and coaches,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. “They make my job easy. They prepare and work their tails off to be the best version of themselves. The team chemistry is something I’ve never seen.”
MSD will head to Fort Myers in search of their third straight State Championship. They are set to be the top seed in the State Semifinals and will play Spruce Creek in their first game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Hawks are 20-10 this year, and despite not winning a Distinct Championship and coming into Regionals as a sixth seed, went on to win their region.
