For the fourth straight season, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team is headed back to the State Championship after winning Regionals over West Broward High School 4-0.
The Eagles improved to 24-5 after beating South Dade and Boca Raton High School in their first two regionals games.
Ethan Askin started the offense for the Eagles with a two-run double in the second to score Nick Diaz and Gio Rojas. MSD tacked on a third run in the third on an RBI from Niko Benestad.
West Broward recorded their first hit in the fifth inning and had runners on second and third before Jayden Dubanewicz got a ground out to end the inning. MSD tacked on one more run in the sixth after aggressive base-running from Cade Raley before Dubanewicz went on to toss a complete game shutout, striking out six to improve to 8-2 this year.
“I just couldn’t be happier with the group, especially the 24 class,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. “They are so resilient and relentless.”
MSD, who has already won the BCAA, District, and Regional Championship, will head to Fort Myers to begin their quest for a fourth straight State Championship. The Eagles will be the top seed and will fave Vero Beach High School in the opening round on Friday, May 17 at 4 p.m. The Indians are 24-4 this year and won 13-3 in their Regional Final after winning a District Championship.
The winner of this game will play either Windermere or Timber Creek High School in the final on Saturday, May 18, at 5 p.m.
