The month of March began with Marjory Stoneman Douglas competing in several big matchups across multiple sports.
Despite hitting three home runs against St. Thomas Aquinas High School, the baseball team fell 7-6 in its first game on Tuesday. Reid Dadic made the start on the mound and also homered, while Randy Ruiz and Lorenzo Laurel each added home runs of their own.
The Eagles bounced back on Thursday night with a win over North Broward Prep. Gio Rojas tossed six scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out nine. Ben Bianchi closed the game with three more strikeouts. The lone RBI in the game came from Laurel, who delivered an RBI single in the fourth inning to help the Eagles improve to 8-3
The softball team recorded five hits but was shut out 6-0 by Coral Springs Charter on Monday. Rebecca Perez had two of those hits. The Eagles then fell 5-3 to Spanish River Community High School on Wednesday. After taking an early 2-0 lead, MSD allowed the next five runs before scoring once in the final inning but ultimately fell short.
The girls lacrosse team had a demanding stretch of five games in nine days and came away with four victories, including a perfect 3-0 record last week with wins over Western, Cypress Bay, and Wellington High School. The Eagles opened the new week with a matchup against NSU University School and pulled out a tight 10-8 victory, but their winning streak ended with a loss to Jupiter High School.
Chloe Resnik currently leads the team in scoring with 30 goals, while Aubrey Kasen and Patricia Phang rank second and third with 28 and 12 goals, respectively. MSD has had eight different players score goals this season, including Mary Denvey, Amanda Bilsky, Noa Capistrano, Morgan McCluskey, and Olivia Lynch. Defensively, the Eagles have been impressive, holding opponents to fewer than four goals on four occasions while also receiving strong goaltending from Marissa Gallagher.
The boys’ lacrosse team has one win this season, which came against Coral Glades. They played twice last week, losing to Olympic Heights and Wellington High School, then opened the week with a 17-6 loss to NSU University School.
In tennis, the boys’ team won all three of its matches, improving to 5-2 this season. The Eagles defeated Western High School 7-0 before beating Deerfield Beach 6-0 and Pompano Beach High School 4-3. The girls’ team improved to 6-1 and did not drop a match against the same three opponents.
In water polo, the boys’ team began the week with a loss to Northeast High School but responded with victories over Suncoast and West Boca Raton High School, improving to 4-7. Benjamin Ruytenbeek scored seven of the Eagles’ 14 goals against the Chargers and followed that with eight more goals in the win over the Bulls. The girls’ team defeated West Boca Raton 18-3 after earlier wins over Suncoast and Northeast High School.
Bella Schubow led the team in goals during two of those victories, while Sadie Titensor had a strong performance to help the Eagles defeat the Chargers. The girls have now won four straight games and improved to 9-3 this season.
