Marjory Stoneman Douglas pitcher Daniel Tartaglia was named Prep Baseball Player of the Week following his incredible performance in his first postseason start, while two other players had milestones at the professional level.
Tartgalia took a perfect game into the seventh inning and finished the game allowing one hit while punching out 18 in a 6-0 win. Tartgalia, who transferred over from Monarch High School before his senior year, has been terrific all season for the Eagles.
“I felt good, threw strikes, and let my defense work, knowing how good this defense is behind me,” Tartaglia said. “Just hitting the spots I needed to hit, and it all worked out.”
The left-hander is 7-0 and has a save while pitching to an ERA of .68. Tartaglia is currently signed to play at Hillsboro Community College. The Eagles are 27-2 this year and are set to play for a Regional Title against West Broward High School as they aim for their fifth straight State Championship.
Four-time State Champion Devin Fitz-Gerald recorded his first professional hit in the minor league with the Texas Rangers. He finished the game 1-3 with two lineouts and a walk. Fitz-Gerald was drafted in the fifth round of the 2024 MLB Draft and named one of the team’s top-30 prospects. He also won three National Championships in High School and hit .397 with 11 home runs and 63 RBIs.
Coby Mayo is also returning to the MLB after being called up by the Baltimore Orioles. Mayo, a 2020 graduate from MSD, made his major league debut in 2024 and recorded his first hit against the Washington Nationals. This season, Mayo started in the minors, had already hit six home runs, and driven in 22 runs before his season debut on Saturday at home as a pinch-hitter against the Kansas City Royals.
