A Parkland woman has been identified as one of the victims in a tragic river accident in central Oregon that claimed at least two lives and left a third person still missing.
Lindsay Bashan, 33, died Saturday after a group of six people on a tubing trip failed to exit the Deschutes River before reaching Dillon Falls—a notoriously hazardous stretch of whitewater with a steep 15-foot drop, authorities said.
According to media reports, Bashan was a graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and Florida State University.
Authorities confirmed Bashan’s death Tuesday following recovery efforts by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue teams.
The group had been floating on inner tubes tied together when they missed the final takeout point and were swept toward the falls. Three members of the group managed to jump from their tubes and reach the shore. At the same time, the other three, including Bashan, were carried into the rock-laden rapids and falls – terrain that poses serious danger even to experienced paddlers, authorities said.
Sheriff’s officials said the area is “extremely dangerous” and features obstructed sections of whitewater with rocks, logs, and other debris.
A second deceased victim was identified as Amanda Loyd, 40, of Rockwall, Texas, the sheriff’s office said.
The identity of the final missing person has not yet been released, pending recovery and notification of next of kin, authorities said.
“This has been a difficult and emotional incident,” said Jason Carr, spokesperson for the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. “They have led a coordinated and effective mission under very challenging conditions, and their work has already helped bring answers and closure to two grieving families.”
