Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and Westglades Middle School got to snap selfies with the Stanley Cup, the NHL’s iconic championship trophy, on Friday.
Ten weeks after their hometown Florida Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers to claim their first NHL championship, rows of beaming MSD students walked past the Cup – currently in the Panthers’ possession – as it stood gleaming on a table in a school hallway.
At Westglades Middle, the Cup was carried into a pep rally, that included school cheerleaders and a crowd of roaring students.
It was a sight kids at both Parkland schools are unlikely to forget—especially the die-hard Cats fans among them.
“We’re so excited to have the Stanley Cup here at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School,” said Broward County School Board Chair Lori Alhadeff. “The students are so happy [and] excited, and what a wonderful opportunity.”
Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn said the Cup’s arrival at the schools represented “a great opportunity for our kids to come and actually see the Stanley Cup … [and] take pictures with it.”
“This is so special,” Hepburn said.
The superintendent said he’d never been as close to the Stanley Cup as he was on Friday and marveled at the fact he was able to touch the most revered trophy in sports.
“The Cup is amazing,” said Hepburn. “Hopefully, the Panthers bring it back home again next year.”
The school visits were coordinated by Panthers Goaltending Coach Rob Tallas, according to BCPS.
