Westglades Middle School continues its incredible success in golf and soccer with three championships.
The golf teams won their fifth straight MSAA Championship Wednesday at the Country Club of Coral Springs.
“Both teams are made up of great golfers,” Head Coach Paul Battaglia said. “They all concentrate and focus on their craft. They strive to improve all the time.”
Andiara Raton repeated as County Champion for the girls, shooting a 37, while Victoria Frias recorded a 40 to place second, followed by Riley Tse with a 43. Hannah Dressler also placed eighth for the Wolves, as they won by 24 strokes.
Battaglia said that having won four in a row, the girls’ team was on a mission for five. “Having the individual third place and champion back from 2023 made them compete hard. At tryouts, they and I believed they would win their fifth in a row and finish individual first, second, and third.”
Matthew Freeland led the Westglades boys golf team after taking second place. The rest of the team consisted of Aarav Thankker, Jackson PrinJose Sebastian Cordova, Matthew Freedland, Ryan Bombulie, Lachlan Oosterhuis, Logan Branding, and Vansh Thakker. This was the team’s fifth championship in eight years.
“The boys wanted the championship,” “Battaglia said. “They all wanted to have their best rounds. They knew they as a team had a chance, but it would be close, and it was, defeating Tequesta Trace by two strokes.”
The Westglades girls’ soccer team also completed a perfect season, winning 1-0 over Pioneer Middle School in the final. The Wolves did not drop a game all season, and Nadia Tomlinson, who scored the lone goal, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship Game.
The Wolves shined defensively behind Tenley Plambeck, Mary Mocco, McKaela Battle, Sarah Devney, and Alyssa Rodriguez, while their goaltender, Sabrina Cernech, allowed only one goal all season. Tomlinson and Billiet combined for 22 goals.
The rest of the winning team consists of Aimee Vignola, Grace Ulinski, Jenna Ashry, Alexys Caropreso, Sabrina Friedman, Jordyn Gibney, Celeste Korol, Alyssa Rodriguez, and Sophia Yamhure.
“I am so proud of the commitment these players have made to bring their best effort to each match and show up for and encourage each other to do and be better,” Head Coach Kathryn Cottrell said. “I will sorely miss my 8th graders and hope they enjoy an opportunity to continue playing the sport they love.”
