The High School football regular season is officially underway, with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas team taking on McArthur High School on Thursday night.
The game featured a lightning delay, a second half running clock and a power outage that ended the game midway through the fourth quarter with the Eagles falling 26-15.
“It’s difficulty to compete with an athletic team like McArthur High School when you make too many mental mistakes,” Head Coach Keith Hindsley said. “We gave up too many explosive plays putting our team behind after the first half by three scores.”
Lawrence Morantus scored the team’s first touchdown from three yards out, while Caleb Hensley caught a 4o-yard touchdown pass from Jaxon Anger for the team’s other score. The Eagles scored their only points in their kickoff game against Western High School with a safety and recorded one in their loss against McArthur.
This is the first time in six years the Eagles did not record a win in their first game. They will be in action on September 8 on the road at Plantation High School at 7 p.m. The Colonels opened their season with a matchup against Hallandale High School and beat MSD 40-26 in 2022.
“We have some positions to evaluate during this coming off week,” Hindsley added. “Try to do a better job as a coaching staff to get the right kids on the field and to eliminate our mental mistakes.”
