The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team, ranked number one in the country, won its first two games of the South Walton Showdown. However, they lost their final game, ending their 59-game win streak on Saturday.
The Eagles beat South Walton 4-2 in the first game on Thursday. Gavin Gargiulo pitched four strong innings to record the win. He struck out seven before Luke Cherry came in to toss two scoreless innings, and Jayden Dubanewicz recorded the save. Rylan Lujo, Niko Benestad and Nick Diaz all had RBIs.
MSD then played Farragut on Friday, the 11th-ranked team in the nation, and beat them 4-2. The Eagles scored all their runs in the first inning, with Gio Rojas earning the win on the mound, pitching five innings with nine strikeouts. Breylynn Courtney tossed the final two innings and put the tying runners on base behind a diving stop from Michael Ossenfort to end the game. Ossenfort also had an RBI along with Lujo, Diaz, and Laurenzo Laurel.
The Eagles were stunned in their final game, losing 5-4 against Lincoln. After falling behind 3-0, Devin Fitz-Gerald hit his first of two home runs in the game. The senior added another one in the seventh to cut the deficit to one. However, the Eagles fell a run short for the first time since 2022.
MSD will be back in action on Tuesday when they play Coral Glades at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles will also play St. Thomas Aquinas and Archbishop McCarthy High School later in the week.
