The Andrezza Facanha Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy celebrated its grand opening on Monday with a ribbon cutting by the Parkland Chamber of Commerce.
Those who came could see the Academy, where individuals learn about the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Owned by Andrezza Facanha and Edgar Estevez, their goal is to bring the art of Jiu-Jitsu to the Parkland/Coral Springs communities to enrich people’s lives.
According to Estevez, Jiu-Jitsu is an art in which people learn techniques to contain opponents and use self-defense rather than combat. It builds self-confidence and discipline.
“We offer kickboxing and sparring, and we teach self-defense. We show individuals how to contain another person’s aggression without violence.”
Facanha believes that jiu-jitsu can help young people develop physically and mentally. She offers training and testing so that individuals can advance in the sport.
“We have programs for people of all ages starting at 3 years old and teach women self-defense skills. We welcome everyone who wants to learn Jiu-Jitsu,” she said.
A two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and a multiple-time open tournament champion, Facanha holds the rank of 4th-degree black belt. She has been training and teaching the art for over 24 years and is a certified personal trainer and physical therapist.
Estevez holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has won multiple open tournaments. He has 8 years of experience in training and teaching art. Their daughter Maria, 17, is a blue belt in Jiu-Jitsu and has been practicing the art since she was 6, according to Estevez.
The Academy is open Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Early morning classes are offered at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes for homeschoolers are available on Wednesdays and Fridays at 11 a.m.
The Academy is at 5659 Coral Ridge Drive in Coral Springs at the Shoppes at Heron Lakes.
