The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team is set to play for another Regional Championship following a pair of wins over J.P. Taravella this week.
The Eagles beat the Trojans 12-2 in Game 1 on Wednesday, with Jake Rizzo and Nick Diaz both homering. They also combined for five RBIs while Gio Rojas not only drove in three, but dominated again on the mound, working into the sixth inning. He allowed two runs and struck out nine before Breylynn Courtney came in to pitch and added one more strikeout. Lorenzo Laurel and Erick Torres each drove in runs while Bennett Gary had four hits and scored three runs.
In Game 2 on Thursday, Daniel Tartaglia got the ball, coming off his National Player of the Week award following his 18-strikeout performance against Coral Glades, he shined once again, as did the offense, which scored four runs in the first and second innings. Diaz, Rizzo, Rojas, and Drew Freeman all drove in runs while the Trojans also struggled defensively.
Diaz then homered for the second straight game in the fourth before the Eagles added a 10th run following a Cade Raley sacrifice fly. Tartaglia pitched four scoreless innings before Chase Wildroudt pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
MSD is now 27-2 and will play either Christopher Columbus or West Broward High School. The Explorers won 1-0 in the opening game of Regionals and have 27 wins this season, while the Bobcats beat Southwest High School in the Regional Quarterfinals but lost twice to the Eagles earlier in the year.
