Talk Media’s local online publications won five awards at this year’s Florida Press Club event on Jan 27 in Clearwater.
FPC President Anne Geggis said it was the best turnout in years.
“It seems like people here miss the camaraderie of newsrooms since so many people haven’t returned to the office.”
Scott Maxwell, a columnist for the Orlando Sentinel, delivered this year’s keynote speech, reflecting on his 25 years of journalistic work.
This year’s Frances DeVore Public Service Award winner was the Sun-Sentinel with their investigative expose “Innocence Sold” on human trafficking. Those writers were Brittany Wallman, David Fleshler, David Schutz, and Spencer Norris.

First Runner-Up was The Villages Daily Sun and their story “The Untold Stories Behind Ian’s Immense Death Toll.”

Talk Media aims to bridge the gap left by newspapers. Based in Coral Springs, they started in 2010 with The Woodlands and expanded to include Tamarac Talk in 2011, Coral Springs Talk in 2012, Parkland Talk in 2017, Margate Talk, and Coconut Creek Talk in 2022.
In 2023, the online publications received 9.7 million unique views.
For nearly 75 years, the Florida Press Club has honored the best in Florida journalism, from layout to photography to writing.
Geggis believes that the role of journalists is still vital to our communities.
“Traditional news outlets are facing a lot of challenges; online upstarts are trying to find their audience, but we’re all still doing good work.”
