Marjory Stoneman Douglas had another spring season highlighted by several State Championships and other long playoff runs.
Devin Fitz-Gerald led the baseball team to a fourth straight State Championship and was named Broward County Player of the Year. He was also named Florida Dairy Player of the Year after hitting .407 with five home runs and 26 RBIs. Fitz-Gerald stole eight bases and will attend NC State next year following their run in the College World Series this year.
Taylor McGovern, a Lee University signee from the girls lacrosse team, was named Player of the Year and led the county with 70 goals and 96 assists. She was also a two-time All-American, helping the Eagles reach the State Final Four. Savita Bagirathan was named Player of the Year from the girls tennis team and went 15-0, winning the State Championship. She became just the second player in school history to win the title.
The baseball team had four players selected to the All-County First Team: Niko Benestad, Rylan Lujo, Jayden Dubanewicz, and Gio Rojas. Benestad and Lujo combined for eighth home runs and 60 RBIs. Dubanewicz went 9-2 this year with a .63 era, while Rojas pitched in five games and went 4-0. He also struck and struck out 41 batters in 21 innings with an ERA of 1.00.
Nick Diaz, Gavin Gargiulo, Bennett Gary, and Alex Rodriguez were named to the Second Team, while Luke Cherry, Breylynn Courtey, and Brayden McCluskey were Honorable Mentions.
The softball team reached Regionals under first-year head coach Samantha Kelly. Addison Zajkowski was picked to the Second Team, and Myah Boleen, Amanda Dang, Victoria Diaz, and Isabella Silva were named Honorable Mentions.
In lacrosse, Darren Edenbaum, MSD’s all-time leading scorer, was named to the First Team. He scored 73 goals and broke the Broward County record for goals in a game with 13. Preston Gerena was named to the Second Team, and Matthew Nason was an Honorable Mention for the boys.
The girls lacrosse team had Gracyn Hayes and Chloe Resnick picked to the First Team. Hayes scored 13 times, three assists, 35 ground balls, and had 16 draw controls. Resnick had 68 goals, 18 assists, 30 ground balls, and 20 draw controls. She also scored an overtime winner for her 100th career goal against St. John Paul II Academy. Aubrey Kasan and Patricia Phang were picked to the Second Team, while Maggie Davis was an Honorable Mention.
In tennis, Dennis Oliveira Jr. made the first team and won a District Championship. He finished the year 9-3 and made it in doubles after going 6-2 alongside Danny Platovsky.
The doubles team of Bagirathan and Allison Kehler made the Second Team, while Dhea Bagirathan and Eesha Kondlapudi were Honorable Mentions. Coming off a District Title and their best season in over a decade, the girls flag football team had Samantha Calavetta, Courtney Heymach, and Savannah Tenore as Honorable Mentions. Juan Lopez made the second team for the boys in water polo. At the same time, Justin Berke, Nathan Didovic, and Noah Seid were Honorable Mentions for the boys, and Brittany Bean, Viviana Fernandez, and Sadie Titensor were recognized by the girls. Sophia Zengotita was also an Honorable Mention from the girl’s track and field team.
