Marjory Stoneman Douglas continues to make history with their wrestling team as they punched their ticket to their first-ever dual meet State Championship before placing third in the 3rd Boca Joe Bonnie Invitational.
The Eagles were previously seeded first in the District Duals and beat Coral Springs High School before beating them again in the Regional Duals along with Western High School. MSD tied for third place with Barca Goleman High School in the 3rd Boca Joe Bonnie Invitational. They had 128 points, only behind Spanish Riber and South Broward High School.
David Leiva came first in his weight class for the Eagles, while Bryce Siddens and Timothy Carroll were runner-ups. Keegan Lake won his third-place match, while Santiago Caro and Jackson Zajkowski finished fourth. Next, the Eagles will hold Senior Night on Wednesday, January 23, before competing in the final of the state duals on Friday, January 25.
The soccer teams completed their regular seasons and entered the postseason as the top team in the District Tournament. Last year, the boys’ team won the District Title and had a dominant regular season, going 9-2-2. The Eagles began the season with wins against Western Deerfield Beach and Monarch High School before recording a tie against Cypress Bay High School.
After losing their first game against Pembroke Pines Charter, MSD won against Coral Glades before losing their first game against Pembroke Pines Charter. They then went on to win five straight before finishing the season 0-1-1.
The Eagles outscored their opponents 28-11 and are led in goals by Nolan Alba and Aquiles Yiribin with five. They have had 11 players score goals this year and currently rank as the 37th-ranked team in Florida and 122 nationally. They will be the top seed in the District and will have a bye in their first game before facing the winner of Spanish River and Western High School on Thursday, January 23, at 6 p.m.
Coral Glades also has a bye after finishing second. They will be on the other side of the draw, facing the winner of Boca Raga and J.P. Taravella. The finals are set for Monday, January 27, at 5 p.m.
The girls’ team also earned the top spot in Districts and has won the last six titles. They had a unique season, winning seven games, losing only once against South Broward High School, and playing in six ties.
While playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, the Eagles had wins over Western, Cypress Bay, Coral Glades, Pembroke Pines Charter, Flanagan, Cooper City, and ST. Thomas Aquinas High School. They rank 28th in Florida and 74th nationally, outscoring their opponents 28-8 and having 12 players score goals.
The Eagles will have a bye in the opening round and will play the winner of Coral Glades and Western High School on Friday, January 24, at 4 p.m. Spanish River earned the two seeds and will play J.P. Taravella or Boca Raton Community High School. The final is set for Tuesday, January 28, at 5 p.m.
