In a display of talent and determination, 11-year-old Mikayla Golka, an aspiring hockey player from Parkland, was crowned Little Miss ARC Broward.
According to Julie Price, Arc Broward CEO, the Miss Arc Pageant is a unique platform that empowers young girls and teens with disabilities to pursue their dreams, celebrates their extraordinary abilities, and sends a powerful message that individuals with disabilities deserve opportunities to shine.
Despite her victory on the pageant stage, Mikayla’s heart is set on making history in the rink as the first female to win the Stanley Cup.
During the talent portion on stage, Golka showed her hockey skills and hit a slap shot. She then presented the Florida Panthers’ history and the Rat Trick story in front of seven judges.
According to her mother, Erin August, she was excited about winning and happy when they called her name.
“She has a real interest in hockey and wants to learn the game. She would love to have the opportunity to try out and make a hockey team. She loves competition in the spirit of the game,” she said.
Since the pageant in May, Golka has earned more recognition and had some fun. She graduated from the fifth grade at Riverglades Elementary School and looks forward to attending Westglades Middle in the fall.
On June 7, she was featured on Good Morning America and was interviewed about her life and accomplishments.
Golka and her mom also received tickets to attend the first game of the Stanley Cup in Sunrise courtesy of the Panthers and the NHL.
