Marjory Stoneman Douglas had a week for their seniors, recognizing student-athletes from baseball, softball, and flag football.
The baseball team had a memorable Senior Night following a 10-1 win over Doral Academy. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, Senior Night was moved a day later, and their game rained out. The Eagles went on to recognize a senior class full of State and National Champions and college signees, including Luke Cherry, Erick Torres, Bennett Gary, Breylynn Courtney, Drew Freeman, Jonathan Rodriguez, Nick Diaz, Gabe Rodrigo, Michael Ossenfort, Carter Wojcik, Chase Wildroudt, Andrew Sarro, Payton Jay, and Daniel Tartaglia.
The seniors drove in five runs, with Diaz homering while Ossenfort led the way with two RBIs. Freeman and Torres also knocked in runs, with junior Jake Rizzo hitting a two-run home run and Gio Rojas knocking in one.
MSD used four pitchers after Courtney started the game. He went two innings with Tartaglia and Rojas, while Wildroudt also had a scoreless inning with the team striking out ten. The Eagles finished the regular season with a record of 21-2 and currently rank third in the state and ninth nationally.
MSD will open up the District Tournament with a game against fourth-seeded Coral Glades on Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m. The Jaguars went 14-5 this year, while J.P. Taravella will face Western High School in the other semifinals. The winner of both games will play for a title on Wednesday, April 16, at 7 p.m.
The softball team knocked off J.P. Taravella 19-2 on Senior Night, recognizing Addison Zajkowski, Antonia Nelke, and Lucia Perez. The Eagles had 11 players knock in at least one run, with Nelke, Sophia McComas, and Kalitlin Enright driving in two. Zajkowksi, Camryn Ferro, Hanka Kardos, Lily Torres, Myah Boleen, Dani Rincoln, Caleigh D’Agati, and Maya Korenge all plated one.
Enright also allowed only one earned run and struck out six in four innings to help the Eagles improve to 8-8. They are set to close the regular season out with three more games before the start of the District Tournament.
On Monday, the flag football team closed out a perfect regular season with a 26-0 win over Pompano Beach High School. The Eagles recognized Samantha Orr, Sophia Dal Molin, Daria Boykin, and Savannah Tenore. During the game, Samantah Calavetta went 17-22 for 147 yards and three touchdown passes.
Courtney Heymach had a receiving and rushing touchdown, while Audrey Haltiwanger and Dal Molin scored touchdowns. Defensively, Alina Caravello led the team with five flags pulled, and both Haltiwanger and Boykin recorded sacks. Molin also added two interceptions, while Caitlyn Taylor and Tenore recorded one.
MSD heads into the postseason as the top seed in the District after going 11-0. They allowed only six points all season, including against Boca Raton Community High School on February 26. The Eagles also won against Olympic Heights, Coral Glades, McArthur, Boyd H. Anderson, Fort Lauderdale, Cooper City, Monarch, West Boca Raton, and Coral Springs Charter.
The Eagles, who won their first District Championship since 2010 last year, will head into the tournament this year as the top seed and will have a bye in the opening round.
