With the baseball season set to begin, Marjory Stoneman Douglas has six graduates set to play in 2024.
Anthony Rizzo, a 2007 graduate from MSD, is set to play his 14th season in the major league and is expected to be the New York Yankees starting first basemen. The three-time all-star and 2016 World Series Champion is five home runs away from 300 in his career. He is also 70 RBIs away from 1,000 despite missing some time in spring training due to an injury.
Jesus Luzardo, who played three years at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, is set to pitch on opening day for the Miami Marlins this year. He is coming off his best professional season. Last year, Luzardo went 10-10 with 208 strikeouts. He pitched in four spring training games and will make his first start against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Coby Mayo is set to start the 2024 season in Triple-A ball but could make his debut later this year for a talented Baltimore Orioles team. The 2020 graduate is currently the 30th-ranked prospect in baseball. He has already hit 57 home runs in the minors and played in 21 spring training games, hitting .324 with a home run and nine RBIs.
Roman Anthony, who graduated in 2022, is currently the 24th-ranked prospect in baseball. He finished last season in Double-A and has a chance to make his major league debut later this year. Anthony had six at-bats in spring training and had a pair of hits against the Detroit Tigers on February 29.
Hunter Fitz-Gerald had a tremendous high school career and carried that over to college with Florida Southwestern State and Old Dominion. Despite going undrafted, he signed with the Seattle Marines and played 12 games in rookie ball, hitting a home run and driving in 10.
Gavin Conticello won a state championship in his only year with Marjory Stoneman Douglas in 2021 and had three spring training at-bats with the reigning National League Champions, Arizona Diamondbacks. He finished last season in high-A ball, has hit 20 minor league home runs, and has driven in 92 RBIs.
