The postseason is underway at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, highlighted by a District Championship, second place finish, and run to Regionals and State.
The girls’ golf team won a District Championship at the Country Club of Coral Springs and placed four players in the top 10 individually. Elisa Hernandez recorded an 81 and finished fourth, followed by Sutton Oosterhuis with an 82. Sophia Alcala Marks and Ella Thompson shot 85 and 87, respectively, while Stella Marvel came in 14th.
The boys’ team came in fourth behind Josh Lieberman and Max Rosen, placing eighth with a 79. Carson Meredith, Diego Femenias, and Evan Mazanec competed and shot in the 80s. Next, MSD will compete in Regionals on Monday, November 4, at the Park West Palm.
The swim team continued their terrific season with a strong performance at the District Championship, with the boys and girls finishing in second place.
Sophia El Chantiry took first place in the 100-yard butterfly and second in the 50-yard freestyle. The Eagles also had two relay teams finish second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with El Chantiry, Hope Suther, Alexa Anthony, and Carly Chin.
Anthony, Giann Sands, Brittany Bean, and Allyson Lake qualified in the 400-yard freestyle relay, while Lake made it in the 100-yard backstroke after placing second.
Additionally, Chin, Sands, Titensor, Perez, and Suther went on to qualify for regionals after the other district meets for two more individual races, along with Anthony, Titensor, Rogers, Grossman, and Roma. Chin, El Chantiry, Lake, and Suther were also sent to qualify in the 200-yard medley relay.
The boys team saw Alexander Nichols win the 100-yard butterfly and second in the 200-yard freestyle. Lorenzo Herek and Roman Kondrashov each came in second, while their relay teams of Blake Balkcom, Matias Gold, Lorenzo Herek, and Nichols qualified in the 200-yard medley. Blake Balkcom, Lorenzo Herek, Alexander Nichols, Xyen Walker, and Alexander Nichols will swim in the 200-yard freestyle, while Matias Gold, Roman Kandrashov, Jayson Muncan, and Xyen Walker will swim in the 400-yard freestyle. Herek, Kandrashov, Gold, Walker, and Joesph Villalobos will all swim individually.
Next, MSD will swim at Regionals on Thursday, October 31, in Sunrise.
The bowling team had four finishes in the top 20, with Bryce Gregory placing seventh, followed by Angel Ferringo. Luke Munson came in tenth, while Vicent Cieullo finished 15th. The boys came in third place as a team with 2,958 points before losing against J.P. Taravella and Boca Raton Community High School. The girls’ team knocked down 1,005 and came in 12th.
Gregory went on to compete at States at the Boardwalk Bowl Entertainment Center and finished day one 63rd after recording a four-game total of 789.
The girls’ volleyball team’s season ended following a four-set loss against Coral Reef High School. Despite winning a District Championship, the Eagles were seeded seventh and lost 25-19, 19-25, 17-25, 22-25 to the second seed.
The Eagles finished another incredible season with ten wins, including a Preseason Tournament win. Nine seniors, Camila Marrero, Sofia Maresca, Avivyah Henderson, Victoria Llanvaneras, Lindsay Rogalla, Elle Naqvi, Grady Fraysure, Addison Walker, and Lily Ledbetter, will graduate.
Addison Walker finished as the team leader in kills, while Isabella Cox ranked second and led MSD in aces and digs. Avivah Henderson, Alyssa James, and Mia Espino shined defensively with her blocking, while Navqi and Ledbetter combined for nearly 300 aces.
The girls’ team finished third place in cross country during Disticts at South Country Regional Park. Sophia Zengotita led the way, placing 18th overall individually, while Carline Schwartz and Not Norman were each in the top 25. They were followed by Sparta Koumoutsakis, Cecilia Gago, Olympia Koumoutsakis, Morgan Melchiorri, and Rebecca Bridger.
The boys’ team placed 11th, and Noah Alba qualified for Regionals after placing fifth. Alexander Spadaccini. Caleb Walker, Calyx Olsen, Isaac Reyes, Mateo Quinn, Colton Pattok, and Matthew Rosenberg ran for the boys’ team.
Regionals are set for Wednesday, November 6, before the state championship begins on November 16 at Apalachee Regional Park.
