Former Marjory Stoneman Douglas star Anthony Rizzo has officially been announced as a 2024 Hall of Fame Inductee with the Portland Sea Dogs.
“Back when I played here in 2010 with the Red Sox, it was one of the best summers…one of my most memorable summers in the Minor Leagues,” Rizzo said. “A Lot of good memories here, and it’s nostalgic coming back 14 years later and playing again.”
Rizzo, who graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas in 2007, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of that year’s MLB Draft. He played in 107 games with the Sea Dogs and hit 20 home runs, 80 RBIs, and 30 doubles. Rizzo was later traded to the San Diego Padres, where he made his MLB debut before winning a World Series with the Chicago Cubs.
The left-handed slugger plays for the New York Yankees. This year, he has hit eight home runs and driven 31 runs. He missed significant time with a back injury but is back with the Yankees, preparing for the postseason.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas pitcher Gio Rojas shined in Marlins Park’s 2024 Prep Baseball All-American Game.
Entering his junior year with MSD, Rojas struck out the side in his only inning and was one of five players to be named All-Americans.
The University of Miami commit had a sensational start to his varsity career with the Eagles, going 4-0 with an ERA of .66. His most dominant performance came against J.P. Taravella, with 19 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout. He was also named National Player of the Week. Despite not pitching in the second half of the season, Rojas also hit .333 with five RBIs, helping MSD win its fourth consecutive straight State Championship.
The Eagles also had several players competing in the Prospect Fall Select Fall World Series. The 025 team, which won the BCS Championship earlier this summer, played four games on Sunday and reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated. The 026 team outscored their opponents 16-5 in their first three wins during the tournament but fell 5-1 in their final game. The Pokers had another team that went 1-2, with their lone win coming by a 10-0 shutout, while their final squad had a 13-0, 12-1, 9-1, and 8-4 win before they lost their last game 13-2.
